October Fields

October fields in silence lie
Exposed and stark beneath the sky,
And to the artist’s eye they seem
A quintessential autumn theme.

Earth-bound creatures panic now
To move their homes before the plough,
But drenched in sudden storms they find
Threats far greater than Mankind.

Leaving now in vast array
Migrating flocks are on their way,
Fearless that the flight ahead
May send them to their doom instead.

The time for fruit is at its last
With harvest labour all but passed,
Our stores bulge full, the soil lies bare,
For we again have reaped our share.
