Oh If

Oh, if failure never beckoned
If life could just be fun,
We’d stretch each precious second
For a minute yet to run.

Oh, if only it could be the case
If it really could be so,
Every threat we’d bravely face
With those we trust and know.

Oh, if we could disentangle
The true word from the lie,
Detect the trickster’s angle
Or prankster’s scam defy.

Oh, if only we might find some peace
Through dreams that yet come true,
Anguish in our hearts release
To sleep the whole night through.

Oh, if all our plans were heaven-sent
Turn out the way they should,
Each promise made, each truly meant,
Intended for the good.

Oh, if joy was never brief
And laughter ruled our breath,
No more to ever suffer grief
Nor fear approaching death.

Then, perhaps, our hope can be
Once both our lives are through,
Forever you will rest with me
And I shall rest with you.
