Time to Stop Trying

When you can’t understand the graffiti,
All your logic just leads you astray,
You dismiss it as scrawl, yet it plagues you,
What on earth are they trying to say?

Not a clue what they mean by a “smart phone”,
Yet you lie that you know, without shame,
You struggle enough with your landline,
Every gadget you touch seems the same.

When the past holds you more than the future,
Save when new generations appear,
How you melt when they call you their grandad,
Simple words so uplifting to hear.

Sleep-time alone reassures you,
In the dark you can hide in your dreams,
When you wake you have nowhere to turn to,
Once again all is not what it seems.

When you can’t understand the graffiti,
So confused by the young and their “speak”,
Time, perhaps, to stop trying,
Before they declare you a freak!
